I had so much fun doing this interview with Operation Happy Nurse! This is a group started by nurses that is focused on supporting nurses' mental health. We talked about art therapy and ways people can use creativity in self-care.
As an art therapist, I find introducing creative activities an excellent way to highlight one’s abilities and provide engaging experiences that can promote reminiscence, self-expression, communication, and meaningful interactions with caregivers, among other benefits. Even if your family member does not have previous creative experience, there are many ways to become involved.
Each group was given one ceiling tile (approximately 24”X36”) and together created a design or pattern to cover the tile. Together we decided to use primary colors to create some cohesion among the tiles. The children were so excited!
When I first became an art therapist, things were a bit different in the profession. While art therapy had been established as a profession some 30 years or so before I graduated with my master’s degree, it was still a little known profession and I had to continually define it for many individuals and employers I met.
